Card Ministry

The card ministry is an outgrowth of The Purpose Driven Life Bible Study, which was taught many years ago by Ed Campbell and Devin Rhyne. Members of the Bible study became involved in several ministries due to that Bible study. Bobbie Drum, Letha Owen, Lib Spencer, and Wanda Lutz started the card ministry. Since that beginning, Bobbie and Lib have deceased. Kay Polhill, Kathy Dedmond, Mary Anna Rankin, Debbie Cochrane, and Patsy Herman have joined Letha and Wanda in this ministry.

The card ministry makes monthly contacts with “thinking of you” cards. In addition to monthly greeting cards, members are remembered at other occasions such as birthdays and times of loss. At the present, cards are sent to forty-nine households that include fifty-four members. The congregation participates, through the annual budget, by funding the cards and postage for this ministry. This line item allows over 600 contacts to be made on behalf of the congregation of First Methodist!

If you know of someone who needs to receive a card, or if you would like to assist in this ministry, please let the church office know.

Boy Scouts of America

FUMC sponsors Cub Scout Pack 75 and Boy Scout Troop 75. Both groups meet at the church in the Education Building on Monday nights from 6:30 pm – 8:00pm. The Cub Scout group serves boys from Kindergarten to 5thgrade. The Troop serves boys from 6th grade until age 18. These groups are affiliated with the Heartland District.

The Cub Scouts are a very active group of boys that have activities such as Pinewood Derby car races, visiting the local fire department and police departments as well as serving a Thanksgiving Meal to all the heroes in the community. The Boy Scouts have activities such as a week long camping trip at Camp Bud Schiele in Rutherford County, NC, cleaning up the rail trail, serving at the soup kitchen and participating in Lincolnton City Council Meetings.

Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts is about fun, friends, community & adventure. There are approximately 27 girls registered with 4 leaders.

Our troop 20740 is considered a group because we have all age levels working together towards their goals.
Daisy: K-1st -Promise & Law
Brownie: 2nd-3rd working on Brownie Spark
Junior: 4th-5th working on Bronze
Cadette: 6th-8th working on Silver
Sr. Cadette: 9th-11th finishing Silver & starting Gold
Ambassador: 12th - 1st year College - Gold

We learn about sports, careers, sample arts, explore the sciences or travel the world !

We travel the world in our own back door with World Thinking Day, where each year every troop in Lincoln County participates and chooses a different country. The girls work on their presentations by researching their country, giving information about their chosen country with displays, samples of countries cuisine and a craft, and using passports to visit each country in one night. We usually have between 250-300 scouts to attend.

We are very active in the community. We collect canned goods at Christmas for Christian Ministry, blankets & gallon bags for the homeless, recently creating 80 bags. In addition, five of our Silver girls just completed a non-perishable food box for the community on First UMC church grounds.

We enjoy visiting one of our local nursing homes once a month. During a recent visit, we made gift baskets for the nurses station, packed with goodies & played Bingo with the residents.
